Life after college

12 Aug

I’ve spent most of my life thus far in school. Its strange adjusting to a life without it. I found that I actually miss learning. For the last few weeks I had a nagging feeling that there was something I wasn’t doing…that something was missing in my life. After battling with this feeling for a few weeks, I figured out that I actually miss learning.

This surprised me at first. With all of the complaining about hard work that students do, I didn’t think there was anyway I would miss going to class, being highly challenged, meeting deadlines, setting lofty goals, and attempting to accomplishing them. The more I thought of it, the more sense it made that I longed for those things. As someone that never played sports growing up, my only sense of accomplishment came from my achievements in the classroom.

This achievement could be gained in the workplace, but it isn’t happening for me with this first job. The entry level IT position I’m currently in doesn’t offer any real challenge to me. Its the same routine everyday. In school, everyday was different…if nothing else, there were constantly new goals. Sure, at my job there is some very basic trouble shooting, but no lenghty projects to complete, no lofty goals. If I’m not going to go insane doing IT work, I need to get into something where I can be creative, like web development.
